Leon Rosen
Leon Rosen was raised in Project Artaud, a hippy artists commune in San Francisco’s Mission District. He briefly attended SF School of the Arts dropping out to play jazz with elder statesmen Sonny Simmons & Herbie Lewis, composing music for theater, clown shows, circus arts and burlesque in San Francisco, including “Ishtar,” Opera at Burning Man & short films. He moved to NYC to study composition with Niel Waltzer & attend The New School Jazz and Contemporary Music Program, where he met future long-time collaborator Carter Yasutake. Secretly he was pining piano pop songwriting.
Leon moved to Jerusalem, Israel, participating in “Jerusalem Peacemakers,” an organization devoted to reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis. There, he met Nissim Barouch, a vocal coach who would change his life.
“I saw Nissim four times a week. Until then, I gave up on my songs. I slept on friends couches, park benches ...so I could spend all I had on my voice lessons.”
He moved back to the USA, where he met drummer Rachel Zisette. Both artists ended up carpooling on a move to San Francisco. He attended a songwriting festival meeting lead guitarist Lee Jean Jr.
The first tour with Leon Rosen and Band begins September 21 at Silverlake Lounge, Los Angeles.
